JANA ANDREEVSKA is a contemporary composer, professor and artistic director in the world of contemporary classical music.

Jana Andreevska is the first female Macedonian composer and one of the most internationally performed Macedonian composers. She was born in 1967 in Skopje, to parents Olivera Nikolova and Cane Andreevski, both renowned writers. Having very diverse interests in arts, she finished both classical gimnasium and secondary music school (major in piano) in Skopje. Since early age she has been taught by the exceptional piano pedagogue, Stela Slejanska who, as Jana reveals, was the first to instigate her interest in composition and music analysis. After the high-school graduation, deciding not to further pursue a career as a painter, she continued her composition studies at the Faculty of Music in Skopje, with the renowned composer and professor Tomislav Zografski, where she earned both her BA and MA degrees. Her education as a composer also includes numerous workshops in the Netherlands, Poland, USA and Macedonia, with other renowned composers such as Ilija Pejovski, Louis Andriessesn, Ton de Leeuw, Michael Nyman, Francois Bernard-Mache, Eric Gaudibert, John Woolrich, Nigel Osborne, Glenn Hackbarth among others.

In 1991 she started working as a producer for classical music in the Macedonian Radio Television. Since 1995 she has been teaching at the Theory and Composition Department of the Faculty of Music in Skopje (musical analysis, counterpoint, composition etc) where she has recently been tenured as a full professor. From 2005 to 2013 she also held the positions of Head of the Theory and Composition Department and Vice-Dean for concerts and international cooperation.

She has received research fellowships and given lectures at the Arizona State University in Tempe (USA), Academy of Music in Ljubljana (Slovenia), Royal Academy of Music in London (UK), Royal Conservatories in Liege and Mons (Belgium), Yasar University in Izmir (Turkey), University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (Austria), Jerusalem Academy of Music (Israel), as well as series of extra-curricular lectures in her own country.

Her pieces have been performed and recorded by herself and soloists and ensembles such as the Macedonian Philharmonic, the Chamber orchestra of the Macedonian Radio Television, Ensemble ALEA, Contempora Ensemble, Ensemble Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, Saxophone Quartets “Dimov”, “Axone”, Tel Aviv Saxophone Quartet and Saxofonquadrat, choir Collegium Musicum and Darinka Matic-Marovic, New London Chamber Choir, Proars Choir, the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Ensemble Horizonte, Artwork Ensemble, Alliage Quintet, Antarja Quartet, The String Quartet of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Society, 4 Saxess, Calliope Women’s Choir, ensemble ConTempora and pianists such as Marcel Worms, Ana Gaceva, Marija Vrshkova, Natalija Mladenovic, Hajdi Elzeser, Nenad Lecic, Natasha Mitrovic, Liljana Vukelja and Milica Lawrence, Roderick Chadwick, Dejan Sinadinovic, Madalina-Claudia Danila, Jean-Luc Fafchamps and Jean-Philippe Collard-Neven, Steffen Schleiermacher, Milena Arsovska, Vesna Ginovska-Ilkova and others in Macedonia, Serbia, former USSR, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Moldova, Germany, Denmark, France, Russia, Romania and the USA.

Her works have been published on CDs by SOKOM, Dresdner Tage der zeitgenössischen Musik, Peer Music, Zefir Records.

She is an active member of many professional organizations such as the Macedonian Composers Association (SOKOM), a delegate of SOKOM in the European Composers Forum (ECF) and ECSA (European Composer and Songwriter Alliance) since 2008. From 2013 to 2018 she chaired the Artistic Committee of the ECCO (European Contemporary Composers Orchestra). From 2008 to 2019 she was Artistic Director of the festival “Days of Macedonian Music”. From 2019 to 2022 she was Vice-President of the ecf committee and Board Member of ECSA.

Jana Andreevska speaks Macedonian (native), English (fluent), French (fluent), German (passive), Serbocroatian (near-native), Bulgarian (passive).

Her other interests include painting and translating fiction and articles on music from English and French into Macedonian. Translations include Michael Cunningham’s novel “The Hours” (published by “Tri”, 2006); Robert Coover’s “the Babysitter” (published by “Templum”, 2008); Marcel Schwob’s “Vies Imaginaires” (“Templum”, 2018) and Jill Bolte Taylor’s “Whole Brain Living” (“Koncepcija”, 2022).

“The concert started with the extremely linear (based on melodic elements) composition “...am I a falcon, a storm, or an unending song?” of the Macedonian Jana Andreevska. By repetition of the melodic fragments, most of which are built on seconds and thirds, the Polish string quartet “Antarja” established a vivid imitational dialogue among the individual instrumental parts and skillfully revealed the elementary connections of the piece with Bach’s Sonata Nr.3 in C-major. Apart from referring to aesthetics from the past, the musical expression of the piece reflects the contemporary thoughts of the composer about the sound as an independent music category “liberated” from the beauty defined by smoothness and roundness of the tone, instead “extending” the limits of the beautiful with loud, “squeaking” sounds attained by rough strokes of the bow...”

SIGIC, Maia Juvanc, 21.04.2017
“...what needs to be pointed out is that actually the main part of our attention was caught by the works of the Macedonian composers. All three pieces point towards programmatic tendencies, a certain “extra-musical” content, which can be seen in the titles...and in particular in the question mark of Jana Andreevska ( “...am I a falcon, a storm, or an unending song?” ). What we heard was a fusion of external inspiration and internal manipulation with thematic floccules or incorporated fragments taken from already existing music (as is the case with Bach’s Violin Sonata in Jana Andreevska’s piece). In any case, all three composers demonstrate an outstanding knowledge of the compositional techniques, while achieving subtle fusions, dynamic nuances and instrumental timbres accorded with the possibilities of the differentiated performance of the strings as part of the quartet.”

Cantus Nr.199, Zdenka Weber, November 2016
“... the Macedonian Jana Andreevska has chosen a more discreet model for sending not only musical, but also literary references; actually, she represented the aphoristic work (“...am I a falcon, a storm, or an unending song?” ) as one germinating exploration which gravitates and gets lost, which reflects and masks around some allusions to excerpts from the first movement of the Sonata Nr.3 for solo violin, BWV 1005 by Johann Sebastian Bach, in a circular motion whish the composer connects to the verses of one of the poems of “The Book of Hours” by Rainer Maria Rilke. ”

Actualitatea Muzicala, Vlad VĂIDEAN, December 2016
“....Most intriguing of all was the composition “...am I a falcon, a storm, or an unending song?” of the Macedonian Jana Andreevska, on the very edge of the ambient sound, very subtly built on just a few miniature elements of the musical language and syntax, inspired by the lyrics of Rilke and Bach’s music...”

Politika, 26.11.2013, Zorica Premate
“...these boys (“4 saxess”) continued (in Jana Andreevska’s piece “...am I a falcon, a storm, or an unending song?” ) with the enchanting song of the sirens from some mysterious island, with backward echoes, funnels of saxophone tornadoes...”

Blistavo more zvuka, Zorica Kojic, 12.11.2013
“...The piece that brought much more excitement, full of fantasy, is the piece of the Macedonian Jana Andreevska, “...am I a falcon, a storm, or an unending song?” , which, while connecting the initial sphere of this instrument with the return of the mystery, it steps on new paths... As the question mark the composer had left points towards openness, so the music of Andreevska hints untrodden ground. It is magnificent with how powerful sound fantasy this composer born in 1967 lets herself be carried away by the images of the world of Rilke, and with a feeling for the sound possibilities of these four instruments transfers them into a new mystery.”

Südwest Presse, Rafael Rennicke, 18.02.2011
“....on the contrary, a really true work of new music is “...am I a falcon, a storm, or an unending song?” of the Macedonian Jana Andreevska. Fierce and angular seems her piece according to a poem by Rilke, a nervous rockfall in a small space. Dry, but very impressive...”

Reutlinger General-Anzeiger, 18.02.2011
“The Three Dyadic Variations (2015) by Jana Andreevska, once again confirmed the creative invention of the outstanding Macedonian composer. Very interesting, impressive piece which sticks in your memory. The intense interaction of the variations and their mutual connectedness, especially between the first and the second, are some of the characteristics of this work... The rhythmical impulse of the second variation was especially impressive...”

A Concert to Remember - a concert of the outstanding pianist Steffen Schleiermacher, Tina Ivanova, April 2016
“...her piece “The Three Dyadic Variations for solo piano has a ternary structure. The commentary to this music can focus on the configurations in a resonant frame that resembles an organ. The passages shift between a refreshing liberation and an open temperamental dramaticism.”

Actualitatea Muzicala, Nr.12, Mircea Stefanescu, December 2015
“Jana Andreevska has, for example, set a goal for her composition with a riddle-like title (2.2.4 to 4.4.2) to be a specific contrasting sound world of the elusive, distant and broken sounds of one of Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonatas. In this way, she represents the passing of time as eternal category. This she has done quite successfully, by the way creating (or better - above all!) a very interesting sound image, one with rich compositional texture...”

Contrasts, Marko Kolovski, April 2015
“...We witnessed an excellent performance of the newest piece by Jana Andreevska (Mandala, 2015) given by the Ensemble ConTempora, under the baton of Ivan Eminovik....Again we heard a piece with an interesting title which imposes the musical atmosphere, but also the character itself... This process as such represents a journey from the outer world towards the inner sacral center. The piece by Jana Andreevska is exactly like this - meditative... characterized by rich polyphony in which the voices constantly intertwine taking over melodic elements from each other. It associates both to the Renaissance and to the complex poly-modal structures and therefore gives the impression of interweaving of music history and time in general. The modulations in timbre and texture on the other hand, depict the circular repetitiveness.”

Diversity, innovation, attractiveness with the Ensemble ConTempora, Tina Ivanova, April 2016
“...The concert started with the performance of the piece Bolno lezhi... by Jana Andreevska, composed in 2014....Very impressive, contemplative piece with strongly emphasized musical expression and poetic content, Bolno lezhi...possesses as its main property the “economy” of musical means of expression. The thematic material composed on four pitches, is build on repetitive melodic-rhythmic models in different shapes and harmonized with a small number of chords. Thus, a dense sound image is created and a dissonance whose resolution is only for a moment, till the very climax of the piece.”

Impressive creative outbursts, Dojrana Prokopieva, 2016
“...(The opening concert of Music Harvest festival-Odense, Denmark:) The music from the Balkans ( Elective Affinities) immediately caught our attention.”

Politiken, November 13, 2004
“...and a couple more like (Zoran) Eric and Jana Andreevska from Macedonia would be worth getting to know better.”

Politiken, Jan Jacoby, November 21, 2004
“... this evening's distance was reduced in the encounter with Jana Andreevska's poetic work. Her work ( Elective Affinities), based on a few uniform motifs that created echoes of recognizability in various interwoven weights, was sensitive to mysticism, fog and dust.”

Dansk Musik Tidsskrift Nr.4, Anna Berit Asp Christensen, February 2004/05
“...followed by Jana Andreevska's blues (Scattered Blues), which solves the blues clichés in a playful pointillistic music, over the heart-rate pulse. Here the listeners pursed their ears.”
